Thinking with shibari, a Japanese style of decorative bondage, this project explores Asian queerness at the helms of the Western gaze. We play with ribbons (and rope) as a current trend – malleable, fluid, and “coquette-ish” – as well as a medium for themes of embodying desire, the pleasure of constraint, and coming to being terms with being bound by forces beyond your own accord. Being ‘tied’ up means many things, but this project dreams to familiarize this practice of pleasure as a means of reclamation.

Imagine: happening upon a reel of satin ribbon, maybe cutting a few pieces off to make bows in your hair, a necklace, up the trunk of your boots. Slowly, the come to consume you. And there’s a certain comfort and bliss in letting it happen.

How does our embodiment of stype seep into alternative avenues of the everyday beyond our own bodies? Let’s experiment with “post-clothing” fashion is and how we can shape everyday objects into articles of what we deem as fashion and style, enacting and making intimate– how do they become engulfed by our aesthetic navigations of the world?
